This past week, SJS put on their annual spring musical Mary Poppins. Here is the Review’s listicle of the top 10 moments from the show!
- When George Banks screams “The Holy Terror!” when he sees Ms. Andrews
Mr. Banks’ former nanny definitely wins the prize for the most hateable character. Her truly evil cackle and demeanor make me feel like drinking brimstone and Treacle would be a more pleasant experience than meeting her.
- “Feed the Birds”
Though this is a truly beautiful song, I put it towards the end because of how many tears it has caused. The poor old woman’s kind nature touches the hearts of many.
- “Fly a Kite”
The playful, hopeful tone of this song perfectly matches the visual of all of the multicolored kites soaring through the air. The only reason that this moment isn’t near the top is due to the pain it caused to carry out—the kite strings tangled themselves in the lights a few times.
- “Playing the Game”
This song is not in the hit movie, so it was definitely a surprise at first watch. The dancers perfectly executed and displayed the creepy physique of the angry dolls as they came to life in the children’s nursery, sending chills down the audience’s backs.
- The stars in “Anything Can Happen”
A perfect touch to the ending song, actors all wore light-up white rings on their hands. Matching the night sky backdrop, the stars always shone bright for Mary Poppins.
- Mary’s magic bag
One amazing special effect included in the show was the illusion of Mary’s bottomless bag that seemed to fit and carry everything! From a coat rack to a plant, Poppins was definitely a prepared nanny.
- “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”
The catchy song many of us have committed to memory was definitely the most colorful and eye-catching part of the show. Dancers adorned in bright, multicolored dresses contorted their bodies to spell out the extravagant title of the song, a feat hard to forget.
- The kitchen fiasco’s special effects
In the scene before “A Spoonful of Sugar”, the clumsy butler of the Banks’ house makes a mess in the kitchen. Shelves collapse, dishes fall, and a table breaks. However, Mary’s magic puts the kitchen back to the way it was with a flick of her wrist. A flawless stunt, the scene truly shows the full capacity of Mary’s magic—as well as showing off the set crew’s flair!
- “Step in Time”
As the dance with the toughest choreography as well as awesome costumes, this song definitely takes the crown. As the chimney sweeps band together to show the Banks’ children the value of friendship, everyone feels like dancing with them until the end. Not to mention, Bert flies in the air and one chimney sweep does a backflip through the Banks’ parlor!
- Mary Poppins flying
The most magical moment of the show is watching Mary’s bright red coat and big black umbrella float up away into the sky. The feat never fails to send the audience into an ovation, and me, too!
