After a roller-coaster season capped by an electrifying week of school-spirited events and the Upper School pep rally, the Maverick football team headed to Rice Stadium to face the Falcons.

The Maverick football team triumphed against Lutheran South Academy on Sept. 23. Their passion helped them prevail against their opponents and hype up the Mavs in the stands.
“The preseason gives us a chance to bring the new kids into the program, allow them to meet people and then make sure that we’re in shape and ready to go,” said Kevin Veltri, head coach of the football program.

Preseason gives fall sports a head start

Every summer before the start of the school year, each fall sport meets to train for the upcoming season. Freshmen Nathan Kim and Pierce Downey give a brief recap of what each sport did for their preseason training last summer.
The Mavs celebrate another win at the second away game of the season and fill the air with shouts of emotion. As they come together in celebration, their passion echoes from the field to the crowd.

The lights were bright and the spirits high on Sept. 16 when the Maverick football team defeated Second Baptist by 28 points. The passion and vigor the players left on that field carried into the crowd and into the shouts of their victory.
After half-time, junior Stephen Gill bursts through the banner and leads the Mavs onto the field. The following week of Sept. 19, Gill was named one of the top Houston high school football performers by the Houston Chronicle.

On Sept. 9, the Mavs won against Fort Bend, 34-28. Despite the comeback from the other team, the Mavericks finished with a victory and proved their skill on the field.

On Oct. 8, the Mavs beat Episcopal 24-20 for the first time since 2011.
Senior John Avery Foutch roars as the Mavs score against the Knights. “Beating Episcopal was very exciting and helped set the standard for the younger players,” Foutch said, “but ultimately it’s just another stepping stone on our road to SPC.”
