ISAS Spotlight: SJS Jazz Band

The SJS jazz band powered their way through an hour-long performance of “Attitude Dance” by Tower of Power and “MacArthur Park” by Maynard Ferguson at ISAS, April 3.

Accompanying the band during “MacArthur Park” was professional trumpet player Bob Odneal, who was once a member of the Maynard Ferguson Big Band. A long-time friend of SJS Band Director Darrell Parrish, Odneal, now a faculty member at San Jacinto College South, has toured the United States and Europe with musicians including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Mel Torme.

Odneal’s presence contributed to the overall power and artistry of the group.

“It was a great experience to play an exhilarating piece with an expert trumpeter,” trombonist sophomore Alex Hammerman said.

Students were motivated by Odneal’s performance.

“Bob is a passionate artist who inspired the crowd with the same energy that he instilled into his notes,” sophomore clarinetist Cyrus Lee said.
