When Middle School math teacher Brittany Flinn took the stage for an assembly last May, it was the first time most of her students heard her sing. Accompanied by her husband, Flinn dazzled students and colleagues, who got to see her in a new light.
Flinn began working in the math department in the fall of 2019. Over the next six years, Flinn witnessed immense change in middle school, teaching various math courses, including Algebra I, Algebra I Advanced and an accelerated course for seventh graders.
Flinn’s favorite part of working at the School is the autonomy to run her own classroom. She has enjoyed building relationships with her colleagues and teaching students who are eager to learn. She says there is a strong sense of community at the School.
“This is a great place for students to learn and for teachers to teach,” Flinn said.
Noting that the courses she teaches can be challenging, Flinn hopes that kids head into Upper School more confident in their abilities to comprehend difficult material.
“I want kids to know that they can do hard things, ” Flinn said. “They shouldn’t give up on math when it at first seems difficult.”
Flinn also advises her students to listen to what they feel a calling for.
“Make sure whatever it is you’re chasing is truly what you wanna do and what you’re meant to do,” Flinn said.
After the school year ends, Flinn and her husband will begin a six-month van tour around the United States. They will start their travel in Central Texas before making their way to the West Coast, where they plan to entertain at private events, concerts and other gigs.
Flinn and her husband also plan to backpack during their six-month tour. Flinn is most excited for their 10-day trip through Yellowstone National Park. They also plan to backpack around other areas across the western United States.
“It’s going to be hard, but I’m up for the challenge,” Flinn said.
After their tour concludes in November, the Flinns plan to settle in Nashville. Flinn’s husband is a songwriter and takes quarterly trips to Nashville to write music. For the Flinns, living in Nashville a chance to pursue their music career and write for other artists.
Flinn is excited to immerse herself in the music community of Nashville and experience singing in a new way. She has enjoyed her time at the School but is ready to embrace a new journey.
“I would love to keep working here if I wasn’t pursuing this new dream, but I am excited to move and begin a new phase of my life,” Flinn said.
