Under a different set of Friday night lights, girls’ volleyball played in the Texas Tornados Tournament Sept. 12 and 13. The team beat Emery Weiner and Lutheran North.

“It was nice to add more wins to our record,” sophomore Lauren Biegel said.

The Mavs lost to Northland Christian twice as well as to Christian Home School Athletics, going 2-3 overall in the tournament.

“Even though we’re a young team, I think we’re headed in the right direction,” senior captain Monica Dayao said. “We’ve started to come together and play really well.”

One of the standout players in the tournament was junior outside hitter Sydney Moye.

“We played really hard at the tournament and gave it our all,” junior Emma Wertheimer said. “I’m really excited for the SPC counter games. We have a lot of potential.”

This season, the team has also been adjusting to a new program director, coach Karen Morgan.

“With how the seniors had Cotillion the Saturday of the tournament, I have to say that I am proud of the way they played,” Wertheimer said. “Shannon [Francis] had some great blocks, and Allison [Buaas] had some nice digs.”

Girls’ volleyball is 4-5 so far this season. The Mavericks face off against Lamar tomorrow, Sept. 23,  at 5:30 p.m. and St. Pius X this Thursday, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Liu Court.
